UV and the Reef
The initial thinking on reef tanks was to avoid UV, to keep plankton alive. However, with the skimmers and pumps used on aquariums the plankton population in the water column is virtually non existent. You can use a UV continuously (recommended) or just keep one at the ready, in the event of an outbreak.
(IT IS MUCH LESS EXPENSIVE TO GET ONE NOW, BEFORE IT IS AN EMERGENCY)
A UV should be in every fish/reef keepers bag of tricks.
Sizing
Most charts you will see call for a much larger UV unit. Mfgs. have based this on National drinking water standards, where the water is passed through the UV only one time. In aquarium or pond use, the water is passing through the unit 5-6 times an hour, 24 hours a day, day after day. The chart shown is an accurate guide to the required UV unit.

The Aqua Frog can sit on the edge of any pond and give you crystal clear water. The Aqua Frog is unique. This patented device has a Ultra-Violet lamp surrounded by a quartz sleeve to assure that your pond will stay clear. The Aqua Frog UV filter can be connected to any submersible pump or any existing filter this allows for easy installation and a safe environment. Since safety is important to us, all Aqua Frogs are UL listed and ETLC listed. We also offer a 15 foot electrical cord. The Aqua Frog is outfitted with two 3/4" inlets one in the front the other in the back this allows you to place your Aqua Frog at any angle. Aqua Frog outlet is 3/4". The Aqua Frog has a 2" clean out on the bottom.
